If you're in the process of applying for a U.S. visa, you know that the entire journey requires careful attention to detail. Recently, you may have heard some news that adds a new layer of confusion: the U.S. Mission in Nigeria is changing its visa service provider.
First, take a deep breath. This is a procedural change. It does not change the requirements for getting a visa, but it does change the process of how you pay for it, book it, and pick up your passport.
As travel experts who handle these applications daily, we've broken down exactly what this means for you.
What Is Happening?
The U.S. Mission in Nigeria has transitioned to a new service provider to manage the front-end services for visa applications. This includes:
-
The website you use to book your appointment.
-
The method you use to pay your MRV (visa) fee.
-
The customer service channels (phone, email) for inquiries.
-
The locations for passport drop-off and pickup.
The old website (ustraveldocs.com) is being phased out, and a new one (usvisaappt.com) is now the official portal.
This transition, which began in late 2024, has understandably caused some confusion and delays. Here’s what you need to know based on your application status.
1. What to Do if You Have an Existing Appointment
If you already had an appointment booked before the transition, your appointment date is still valid. You do not need to panic.
However, you will no longer be able to log into the old ustraveldocs.com website to manage your appointment. You should have received (or will soon receive) an email with instructions on how to create a new account on the new usvisaappt.com platform. It's very important that you monitor the email address you used for your original application for these instructions.
2. What This Means for New Applicants
If you are starting a new application, you must use the new system from the beginning.
-
New Website: You will create your profile, fill out your details, and schedule your appointment on the new
usvisaappt.comwebsite. -
New Payment Method: This is a major change. The previous system of paying in cash at a GT Bank branch is no longer the primary method. You will now pay your visa fee online through the new portal. This change is meant to streamline the process, but it's crucial you follow the new instructions exactly to ensure your payment is linked to your application.
3. Why It's More Important Than Ever to Stay Updated
This transition is a perfect example of how visa rules can change overnight. And this isn't the only change. The U.S. Mission has also announced other procedural updates, like a new two-visit process (In-Person Document Review and a separate Interview) for some visa categories starting in 2025.
Trying to keep track of which website is correct, which payment method is valid, or what new document rule applies is a full-time job. Using outdated information from an old forum or a well-meaning friend can lead to lost application fees, missed appointments, and total frustration.
